Kingston University's netball and rugby teams raise £1,320 in a charity match

Updated: Apr 1, 2022

Kingston University’s netball and rugby teams raised a total of £1,320 in a charity match event in aid of mental health and suicide awareness. On Thursday the women’s netball team played against the rugby men’s team in Tolworth for the charity organisation Beder. I am blown away by the amount we raised and by the number of people that participated on the day. It also was great to raise money for a brilliant charity like Beder and being able to raise awareness of them to people, and helping them raise money for their cause,” said James Layzell, President of the men’s rugby team. Beder is a charity organisation that raises awareness around mental health and suicide prevention through events and initiatives.

This event was mainly dedicated to Fred Whitehead, who was part of the rugby team in 2019/20. Fred during the first lockdown committed suicide due to mental health. James Layzell said: “He was a very much-loved member of the club and always had a smile and a bubbly personality. The idea of us swapping kits was something we thought Fred would have loved and he would have been one of the first guys to put a netball dress on. We want to honour his memory by raising awareness of mental health and suicide prevention.” Kingston University offers a range of health and wellbeing services The money was collected on the day of the match with £3 donations, but mostly through Justgiving.com, with a supporter even donating £400.

The fundraising is planned to be closed Tomorrow.

Sophie Smith, President of the netball’s women club said: “I’m super happy that we went ahead and made the event happen after a long time of planning. I think everyone involved is blown away by how much we raised, we certainly weren’t expecting that! The support from the clubs as well as family and friends has been fantastic. I’m glad we can donate this to such an important cause that’s close to both clubs.”
