A KU student is taking part in the Kingston International Film Festival contest which will take place across several venues around Kingston in June 24-26 2022.
Bhavishay Kher, 21, is an international student from India who is studying a master's degree in filmmaking and is releasing his second film at the festival.
“It’s a great opportunity to get involved in this and to make connections and even to grow yourself as a filmmaker because it’s not easy to gain experience as such,” Kher said. The festival has received the patronage from award-winners Dame Vanessa Redgrave & Mike Newell, the director of Harry Potter, and aims to provide a platform for emerging talents to showcase their work and help kickstarting their careers.
In addition to film and documentaries screenings, the festival will host an extensive program of workshops, questions & answers and special events.
“I think the Kingston International Film Festival is giving that opportunity to the students and even to people who are living in Kingston, who has interest in films, to see how a film festival is,” Kher said.
He is screening a slow-paced drama entitled You Are A Good Kid which tells a story of grief and acceptance.
"The main protagonist of this film is Sameed who is dealing with the loss of his father and is going through the phase of acceptance and how it is really hard to move on from there, and because I also dealt with loss of four of my best friends, so I know the grief,” Kher said.
Kher has recently released his first film entitled Beyond The Sea – The Untold Story Of The Ayahs, a documentary where he brings the story of the Indian nannies during the British colonization in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Kher said: “I like drama, I like slow movies that deals with emotions and just nothing, just playing music or sound effects.”
You Are A Good Kid is still under production and is scheduled to be completed in the beginning of April. Contestants can submit their work to the festival until April 21 2022.
The winner of the students contest receives a £250 prize.
The winner of the main category, feature film, receives a £1,500 prize.
